NFL Recap: Week 2
This was one of those weeks that proves that even when there’s not a lot of storylines to talk about, the NFL will always surprise you. And the games will always deliver. Here are the three games that everyone’s talking about.
San Francisco 49ers 27, Detroit Lions 19
The 49ers are being called the best team in the NFL this year; and on Sunday they proved why. Vernon Davis was the big hero, catching a 21-yard and 23-yard touchdown pass from Alex Smith. But Smith did his part too, completing 20 of 31 throws for 226 yards, and not surprisingly, had no interceptions for the 216th consecutive pass. There’s really not too much to say about the Detroit Lions, except that they completely fell apart. And how they even managed to get 19 points on the board is anybody’s guess. As for coaches Jim Harbaugh and Jim Schwarz? Well, with a friendly handshake and near-hug, they almost looked like old reunited college roommates.
Arizona Cardinals 20, New England Patriots 18
In big upset news of the week the Patriots, a team that’s always a Super Bowl contender, lost to the Arizona Cardinals who, well, aren’t. Although Pats coach Bill Belichick said after the game “there were a lot of mistakes out there today,” it really all came down to one. With the score sitting at 18-20, Patriots kicker, Stephen Gostkowski, had a chance to put the Pats up by one, but instead put the ball to the far left of the net, giving the Cardinals the win.
New York Giants 41, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 34
The Super Bowl champs were beating a team that didn’t even make it into the playoffs last year; so this was a pretty uneventful game to watch. Until the very end, that is. That was when coaches Tom Coughlin and Greg Schiano decided to give the fans some coach squabbling this weekend, with or without Harbaugh and Schwarz. It happened after Giants’ coach Coughlin attempted what he called a “dirty play” on Eli Manning in the last few seconds. Several other Giants’ players, including Manning, also said that the play was dirty. There was no fist-fighting and not a lot of screaming. But lots of words were said publicly after the game, and it’s clear that there’s now a new rivalry in the NFL.
