Ghost – The Musical Offers a New Take on the Classic Tale
Twenty-three years ago, the film Ghost, starring Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, and Patrick Swayze, charmed and thrilled audiences. It reignited a love for The Righteous Brothers song “Unchained Melody”, and it made couples everywhere think about taking up pottery. It was a successful movie, but at the time, no one probably thought that one day it would become a musical. However, just a couple of decades later, that’s exactly what’s happened. Remarkably, it actually works very well as a musical too!
The musical features a book and lyrics by Bruce Joel Rubin, as well as lyrics and music from Glen Ballard and Dave Stewart. The musical premiered at the Manchester Opera House in Manchester in 2011, and it came to Broadway in 2012.
For those who might not know the story, it’s a fun tale that involves romance and the supernatural. When a young couple, Sam and Molly, are attacked on their way home, Sam dies from his injuries. He passes on to the spirit world, but can’t cross all the way over. In order to protect Molly, he contacts a medium named Oda Mae Brown (Goldberg in the film), and has her relay messages to her for him. Sam learns to navigate the spirit world and he eventually uncovers the reason for the attack, which is when he realizes that Molly is in serious danger. He has to learn how to manipulate the physical realm as a ghost in order to help protect her.
