Born in 1936 in Lettsworth Louisiana, Buddy Guy is one of the most influential and popular blues musicians to have ever picked up a guitar and graced a stage. Some of the other musicians who felt the influence of Buddy Guy include Eric Clapton, Hendrix, Jimmy Page, and Stevie Ray Vaughn. Clapton even claims that he got his idea to form a blues trio when he watched Guy performing in London.

Guy learned to play guitar at a young age and he would play with bands around the Baton Rouge area during the 50s. By the 1960s, he developed quite a reputation and was even a member of Muddy Waters’ band. Many consider him one of the pioneers of the Chicago blues sound, but he’s more than that. His style is unique and his guitar skills are unparalleled. Whether he’s influencing other blues musicians or rockers, they all could stand to learn plenty from Buddy Guy’s style.

Musicians aren’t the only ones who love Buddy Guy though. He won six Grammy Awards throughout his career, and he received the National Medal of Arts. He also has 23 W.C. Handy Awards, and the Century Award from Billboard Magazine. He is a part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, and received an award at the Kennedy Center Honors. While all of the honors and awards are nice, Guy still knows what the most important things are – his music and the connection he makes with his fans.

Anyone who claims to love the blues needs to know Buddy Guy’s music. They need to make sure they see Buddy Guy live too.
