E.P. Taylor Stakes goes to late running Tannery
Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) – Post-time favorite Tannery, ridden by Joel Rosario, went from last to first in winning Sunday’s $500,000 E. P. Taylor Stakes at Woodbine. The Taylor is the filly and mare sister event to the Canadian International.
Trained by Alan Goldberg, Tannery settled into last in the 10-horse field for the 1 1/4-mile turf stakes. Coming out of the final turn on the E. P. Taylor turf course, the 2-1 favorite swung to the outside to begin her rally down the stretch.
The 4-year-old filly, owned by Richard Santulli, quickly moved to the front joining Fitful Skies and Minakshi nearing the wire. In the last 50 yards Tannery was able to hold off Fitful Skies and register a head victory.
“It feels great,” said Rosario, who was riding Tannery for the first time. “I just let her be happy, trying to save some ground. After that, I started to make a little move early. I thought I was going to take over (and pull away) in mid-stretch but that horse on the inside (Fitful Skies) was fighting all the way.”
Finishing third was Moment In Time followed by Minakshi, Samba Brazil, No Explaining, Irish Mission, Moment of Majesty, Colonial Flag and Nancy O.
The time for the E. P. Taylor on a yielding course was 2:07.13.
“That’s the way she wants to run,” added Goldberg. “I was a little worried about three jumps from the wire when the other horse (Fitful Skies) started coming back. Joel saved a little ground down the backside, brought her out where she wants to be and it worked out perfect. She’s a very nice horse and we’ll have a nice year with her next year.”
Tannery gains $300,000 with the win, her second of the year in six starts. The filly has career earnings of $763,352 with six wins in 19 races.
The 4-year-old was coming off a half-length loss to Laughing in the Flower Bowl Invitational at Belmont Park on Sept. 28. She won the Sheepshead Bay at Belmont on May 25 for her other 2013 victory.
Tannery returned $6.00, $3.80 and $3.10. Fitful Skies paid $6.90 and $4.30, and Moment In Time paid $5.00 to show.
