For NHL fans, the winter classic is a must-see (if not a must-attend). The 2011 Winter Classic marks only the fourth time in NHL history for the event in the US, and past Classics, hosted by Buffalo Sabres, Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins show there is overwhelming fan support for the event. Each previous Classic has drawn an average of 4 million television viewers.

The 2011 Winter Classic will be held at Heinz Field – home of the Pittsburgh Steelers – and played between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals on New Year’s Day. The game will be nationally televised, but there are many events at both Heinz Field and throughout the city of Pittsburgh for the entire week.

Events aside from the Winter Classic between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals include a double-header on Thursday, December 30. The first game will feature AHL teams Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins against the rival Hershey Bears.

In the second game, NCAA Division I teams Robert Morris University and RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) will play. One ticket will be good for both games. Stay tuned for ticket details and additional events!
