Brett Favre – Returning (Yet Again) to Football?

Pity poor Brett Favre. It wasn’t really his fault that “The Young and the Favre” scandal of 2008 happened. The man was simply feeling tired and frustrated, having experienced a series of personal tragedies, and was legitimately interested in retiring. Then, suddenly, and perhaps impulsively, he asked for his release from the team allowing him to play for another NFL team — a notion that the Packers rejected.

Favre then explained he really wasn’t ready to retire, but was pressured by his team to make a decision before he was truly decided. Both sides became distrustful of the other, but not before Favre officially returned to the NFL by the summer of 2008. The Packers did provide the release Favre wanted and he went to play for the New York Jets and then the Minnesota Vikings. He retired (for real) in January 2011.

Wait, apparently it doesn’t end there! Now there is some serious talk about Brett Favre returning (again) to play as a backup for the Philadelphia Eagles(who need a little help). However, as of late July, the idea is just a rumor, at least according to Favre’s agent. Michael Vick of the Eagles even tweeted that he would be honored to play with Favre. However, later on, that post was removed, which Vicki coyly stating that he didn’t write it.

Perhaps it helps the situation, that the Eagles lost to the Vikings last NFL season–the last team that had rights to Favre. Still, hard facts remain, that the Eagles do need a quality backup, and that even an aging Favre (finally getting over his injuries) is better than an unproven rising star. Questions as to Favre’s ego (whether he can happily play as a backup) also have to be considered, as well as his confidence (after a disastrous season with the Vikings).

That said, wouldn’t it be sweet for Favre to win a Super Bowl and work (once again) with head coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg (who he remembers from Green Bay?) It’s easy to laugh at Favre’s drama, but not his achievements. He is the celebrated player who has completed the most career touchdown passes, most pass completions, most interceptions, most passing yards and most consecutive starts. What do you think? Is it time for Favre to sit down once and for all (again) or is time for one last hurrah?
