Philadelphia Eagles History

The Philadelphia Eagles are one of the older teams in the NFL as they were founded alongside of another Pennsylvania sports franchise, the Pittsburgh Steelers, in 1933. Of these two squads the Eagles had far more success in the pre-merger years, while the Steelers have dominated in the post-merger era. However, in the beginning, it was all Eagles as they won three NFL Championships in the pre-merger era.

The Eagles did take some time after being founded to get up to speed in the NFL. It wasn't until the Steve Van Buren years that this team would win back to back NFL titles in 1948 and 1949. To date, the Eagles are the only NFL team to win consecutive championships by shutouts in both games. Once these seasons were over, their next title came in 1960. Tommy McDonald, Pete Retzlaff, and Chuck Bednarik were all components of this last Eagles championship team and two of them, McDonald and Bednarik, are in the pro football Hall of Fame.

In the post-merger era, the Eagles were doomed to the bottom of the pack in most years until they hired Dick Vermeil to his first NFL head coaching job. Before this job, he was a coach at UCLA. However, he made the jump and would lead the Eagles to their first Super Bowl appearance against the Raiders in 1981. The Eagles, despite being heavily favored, would lose this game and it wouldn't be until the turn of the millennium that Eagles would again be a leader in their division.

Though the Buddy Ryan years of the late 1980's saw one of the best defenses ever assembled, they could not win a playoff game. This led to three coaching changes in the 1990's before they hired Andy Reid. Reid selected Donovan McNabb with his first pick in 1999 draft and the Eagles entered their first real golden age since the merger. They went to five NFC championship games under Reid and McNabb and one Super Bowl in 2004.
