Washington Capitals History

Even by expansion team standards, when the Capitals first started playing in 1974, they were one of the worst teams to ever take the ice for the NHL. This team was so bad that they set records in negative categories like most losses and most losses on the road. However, by the end of the troubled 1970's decade, the Capitals were on the verge of turning their fortunes around. They pulled off a monster trade by new General Manager, David Poile that saw the Caps get players like Rod Langway and Doug Jarvis.

Armed with a new and much more talented lineup, the Capitals would make the playoffs for the first time in 1983. They would continue to make it to the postseason in each of the next 14 seasons but could never manage to make it further than the second round. It wouldn't be until the 1997-98 season that Caps got their first and only Conference championship and made it the Stanley Cup. However, stars like Peter Bondra, Adam Oates, and goalie Olaf Kolzig could not get past the Red Wings and were swept in four games.

After the 1998 loss, the Caps fell back down the standings due to underperforming veterans. They dismantled the team and started to rebuild for the future. This goal was achieved by when Alexander Ovechkin was selected in the NFL draft. After the locked out season o f 2004-2005, the Caps have been one of the more dominating teams in the Eastern Conference and it is just a matter of time before they are able to break through to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Washington D.C. is the host city for a representative in all four major sports leagues in North America. Other than the Capitals, the Verizon Center is also the home of the Washington Wizards. The Wizards are a member of the NBA. and have been struggling in recent years. However, with Gilbert Arenas due back and high draft picks, don't expect this club to stay in the cellar for long.

Major League Baseball moved the old and unprofitable Expos to this city and built the club a new stadium. The Nationals now play in the National League East Division and have some of the finest young talent on their roster. The Redskins are the oldest team affiliated with Washington D.C. and are a force in the Eastern Conference of the NFL. The team has made some dramatic moves in recent years and expects to once again compete for the Super Bowl.
