Pittsburgh Penguins History
Hockey was not an uncommon sport for the people of Pittsburgh when the Penguins were founded in 1967. The city had already had a pro and amateur team play in this city in the past. However, after the Pirates folded up in 1930, no NHL team was based here until the founding of the Penguins. The name Penguins was chosen because of the nickname for the arena that they would call home has already been nicknamed "The Igloo." Like most expansion teams, the Pen's, as they are known by the Pittsburgh faithful, struggled in their inaugural seasons. However, they drafted Michel Briere in 1969 to help kick-start the winning ways. Unfortunately, Briere would die due to a car crash and the Pens's would fall back down the standings by 1973.
In the 1984, the Penguins landed superstar in Mario Lemieux out of Quebec. Lemieux was a highly touted pick, but the team would later add a solid supporting cast in acquiring Paul Coffey, Rob Brown, John Cullen, and goalie Tom Barrasso. Armed with these players, the Penguins would go on to win two Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. Mario Lemieux would stay with the team through a bout with cancer and would later become the general manager and part owner of the team.
After 2001, the Penguins spent some time in the cellar, which enabled them to draft a stable of superstars that would help this team for years to come. Two of these players were Sidney Crosby and Marc-Andre Fleury. Together, these two players, coupled with other dynamic players like Jordan Staal, Petr Sykora, and Sergei Gonchar, helped lead the Penguins back to the pinnacle of hockey by winning a third Stanley Cup in 2009.
