Boston Bruins History

The Bruins have the honor of being one of the original six teams in the league. One of the very first legends of the game, Eddie Shore, wore the golden B on his chest and made the city proud. During Shore's time with the Bruins, the team would win a total of three championships, the final one coming during Eddie Shore's last season with the team.

Unfortunately, for Bruins fans, the departure of Shore also marked the end of the teams winning ways. Fans stayed loyal, however, and they were eventually rewarded with the arrival of players like Phil Esposito and Bobby Orr. Once again, the team would hold the Stanley Cup at the end of the season in both the 1970 and the 1972 seasons.

Boston was about as close to creating a dynasty as a team could be when it ran into Philadelphia in the playoffs in the 1974 Stanley Cup finals. Philadelphia had only entered the league in 1967, but relied on a very physical style of play that few teams could equal at the time. The downward spiral began, with the Bruins falling on truly hard times in the 1980s. The team would start the rebuilding process again and by the 1990s, the Bruins were once again considered an elite team in the NHL.

The 2009-10 season had Bruins fans on the edge of their seats thinking that this would be the year. The team held a 3-0 lead in the conference championship game against hated rival, Philadelphia. Somehow, Philadelphia managed to come back and win the series in seven games, sending Boston home heartbroken once again. This spurned a desire and a "can't fail" attitude the following season, though, as Boston would once again face Philadelphia in the second round. Roles were reversed this time and as the underdog, Boston sent Philadelphia packing. Boston faced Tampa Bay in the next round and although it was a physical and nail biting series, the Bruins would win and finally make it back to the Stanley Cup finals.
