Yankees officially bring back IF Ryan

Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) – The New York Yankees announced Monday that the team has re-signed infielder Brendan Ryan to a two-year contract that includes a mutual option for the 2016 season.

FoxSports.com had previously reported the deal to be worth $5 million over the next two seasons and contains incentives that could push the total value to $10 million.

Ryan, who was acquired by New York in a trade with Seattle in September, batted just .197 with four home runs and 22 RBI over 104 games with the Yankees and Mariners last season. The veteran is well-regarded for his defensive abilities, however, and provides experienced insurance at shortstop with team captain Derek Jeter coming off a fractured ankle and turning 40 years old in June.

Over seven major league seasons with St. Louis, Seattle and New York, Ryan owns a .237 lifetime average with 19 homers, 187 RBI and 67 stolen bases. The 31-year-old started the final 17 games for the Yankees at shortstop in 2013 with Jeter sidelined, hitting .220 with one homer in 59 at-bats.
