Who Were the Big Winners at the CMT Awards?
This year like most, the CMT Music Awards were more about bringing a big country music show to a group of loyal fans than they were about handing out awards. In fact this year, only eight trophies in total were given out, interspersed between performances by Taylor Swift, Darius Rucker, Jason Aldean, and Carrie Underwood, to name just a few. But of those eight winners, who claimed the most?
Florida Georgia Line emerged as the biggest story of the night, even though they tied Miranda Lambert with two trophies each. Florida Georgia Line won first for Breakthrough Video of the Year for their song “Cruise,” and then won the very next award for Duo Video of the Year – also for “Cruise.”
Lambert walked away with an award for CMT Performance of the Year for her performance of “Over You” at the CMT “Artists of the Year” event. She picked up her second award for Female Video of the Year for her latest single, “Mama’s Broken Heart.” Her husband, Blake Shelton, also won his own award for Male Video of the Year, given for his video of “Sure Be Cool if You Did.”
Carrie Underwood gave an emotional performance of her latest single, “See You Again,” which she dedicated to the tornado victims in her home state of Oklahoma. She later won the award for Video of the Year for her song, “Blown Away,” which is about the devastation left behind by a tornado.
Jason Aldean kicked off the show with a rock performance alongside Lenny Kravitz; and then later picked up an award with Luke Bryan and Eric Church for Collaborative Video of the Year for their song, “The Only Way I Know.”
The award for Group Video of the Year went to Lady Antebellum for their song, “Downtown.”
