Who Cleaned up at the Tony Awards?
Neil Patrick Harris opened the Tony Awards on Sunday night in fine fashion once again. The “seasoned pro” as he called himself during his musical number has hosted the show a total of four times, and this year he did not disappoint. With tons of smooth dance moves, an appearance from Mike Tyson, and even a very cool magic trick, it was quickly dubbed the “biggest and greatest awards show opening ever.” But that opening may have just been an indication of what the night was going to have in store, as big winners and big upsets made it one of the most exciting Tony shows ever.
The biggest winner of the night may not have come as that much of a surprise to most, as Kinky Boots picked up six awards, the most for any musical or play all night. Boots beat out Bring it On, A Christmas Story, and Matilda: The Musical in the “Best Musical” category; and Billy Porter picked up the award for “Best performance by an actor in a leading role in a musical.” The show also picked up trophies for “Best sound design of a musical,” “Best choreography,” and “Best orchestrations.” Cyndi Lauper, who wrote the musical, also picked up an award for “Best original score written for the theatre.”
The biggest surprise of the night came during the award presentation for “Best performance by an actor in a leading role in a play.” Tom Hanks was heavily favored to win for his role in Lucky Guy, but the award went to Tracy Letts for his performance in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.
