What Happened on the First Day of UFA in the NHL?

The NHL‘s unrestricted free agency began yesterday, and while Ryan Suter and Zach Parise still have yet to sign with anyone, there was still much going on and a lot of deals to be made on July 1. Here’s a look at what happened yesterday:

  • Defenceman Joe Corvo signed a one-year deal with the Carolina Hurricanes for $2 million. This will be Corvo’s third time playing with the Hurricanes.
  • Defenceman Mike Lundin signed on for one year with the Ottawa Senators for $1.15 million.
  • Defenceman Stu Bickell stays on with the Rangers, signing a year deal for $750,000.
  • Forward Zenon Konopka hands in his Senators jersey to sign with the Minnesota Wild for two years.
  • Minnesota Wild also sign forward Torrey Mitchell for three years in a deal giving him $1.9 million a year.
  • In the weird deal of the day, the Toronto Maple Leafs bought out forward Colby Armstrong’s contract, leaving him an unrestricted free agent.
  • Only for a few hours though; the Montreal Canadiens signed him on for one year in a deal totaling $1 million. To fill the void of the fourth line left by Armstrong, the Toronto Maple Leafs signed forward Jay McClement in a two year deal totaling $3 million.
  • Forward Guillaume Latendresse signs on with the Ottawa Senators for $1.2 million for one year. Being forward-heavy then, Ottawa traded forward Nick Foligno to the Columbus Blue Jackets for defenseman Marc Mathot.
  • Forward Ray Whitney signed with the Dallas Stars for two years in a deal for $9 million.
  • The New York Islanders signed forward Brad Boyes for one year for $1 million.
  • The San Jose Sharks signed forward Adam Burish for $1.8 million a year.
  • The New York Islanders also signed Matt Carkner for three years, for $.15 million a year.
  • Forward Tanner Glass signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins after leaving the Winnipeg Jets.
  • Forward Arron Asham signed with the New York Rangers for two years in a deal with $2 million. Asham will sit on the Rangers’ fourth line.
  • After an abysmal year in Ottawa, and the little success he did have relying mostly on Karlsson, defenseman Filip Kuba signed with the Florida Panthers for $8 million for two years.
  • Defenseman Francis Bouillon signed on with the Montreal Canadiens for one year for $1.5 million.
  • Forward Dustin Penner stays with his wining Los Angeles Kings, signing on for one more year at $3.25 million.
  • The Canadiens have said that they want to play more physical hockey. Signing forward Brandon Prust yesterday in a deal worth $10 million for four years has helped.
  • Defenseman Greg Zanon signed with the Colorado Avalanche for a two-year deal with $4.5 million.
  • Forward Alexei Ponikarovsky signed on with the Winnipeg Jets for $1.8 million.
  • Forward George Parros signed with the Florida Panthers in a two-year deal for $925,000 a year.
  • Forward P.A. Parenteau, after hearing lots of offers, signs a whopper of a deal with the Colorado Avalanche. The deal is for four years, $4 million a season.
  • Goaltender Chris Mason will once again play for the Nashville Predators this year, after signing a one year deal worth $1.25 million.
  • The Columbus Blue Jackets signed defenseman Adrian Aucoin for one year for $2 million.
  • Defenseman Sami Salo signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning for two years for $7.5 million.
  • Defenseman Bryan Allen signed with the Anaheim Ducks for three years, for $3.5 million per season.
  • Defenseman Aaron Rome signed with the Dallas Stars for three years.
  • Defenseman Jason Garrison signed with the Vancouver Canucks for six years for a deal valued at $27.6 million. Good for Garrison, who turned down more to play at home. Bad for the Canucks, who are now paying through the nose.
  • Matt Brodeur signed back on with the New Jersey Devils for two years, for $9 million.
