The Addams Family Is Back In “Theaters”
Don’t be looking for the altogether creepy Addams family in your local cinema. They are back but they are coming to the theater as a live musical production. The musical comedy, with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa and a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, features your favorite cast of characters like Gomez and Morticia Addams and Uncle Fester.
The production is something unlike you have ever seen before, especially if you only know the Addams Family from the old TV show, starring John Astin and Carolyn Jones, or the movie (starring Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston). The musical is actually based on the original cartoon characters created by Charles Addams, that originally appeared in 1938.
The musical production is definitely not going to be cheesy, with A-list talents taking up the roles. The show opened on Broadway in April 2010 and featured Broadway veterans Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth as Gomez and Morticia Addams. Seriously, these two strange cats were born to play these roles! Nathan Lane (The Birdcage, The Producers) loves tap dancing across that thin line between creepy and funny, while Bebe has always been a beautiful but morbid presence, having embraced roles as ice queen Lilith Crane (Frasier, Cheers) and Velma Kelly (Chicago).
Although Nathan Lane has recently moved on, Roger Rees embodies his portrayal as Gomez, while Bebe continues her role as Morticia until next month, where she will be replaced by Brooke Shields. (The next best choice to play a dead woman, am I right?)
This is a vivacious musical for sure, with catchy tunes such as “Where Did We Go Wrong?”, “The Moon and Me”, and “Tango de Amor.” Composer and lyricist Lippa states that he wrote the score to match each Addams family member in personality and tone. This is how you know you’re going to see something different: one of the requirements of the Addams Family Estate was that producers not base the musical on the movie or the series but on the original cartoons by Addams.
Rest assured, you will see something creepy and cookie when you see The Addams Family live and in person! Get your Addams Family tickets today!
