Florida Panthers History

Wayne Huizenga was awarded an NHL franchise the same year he was awarded a Major League Baseball franchise in 1993. He put his teams in South Florida and the Florida Panthers were born. They were one of the most successful expansion teams in NHL history by narrowly missing the playoffs in each of their first two seasons. Their first playoff berth in 1996 would give way to their first Eastern Conference championship. However, for all of their talent, the Avalanche would sweep them that season in the finals.

The Panthers, or the Cats as they are known by fans, built their early success on the backs of great NHL players like Scott Mellanby, Rob Niedermayer, and goalie John Vanbiesbrouck. An interesting part of their history comes with the addition of throwing rubber rats on the ice after a goal is scored. This is because Mellanby one-timed a rat in the locker against the wall killing it during the 1997 season. Since then, hat tricks have been dubbed rat tricks, and the ice would be flooded with rubber rats instead of hats whenever a player scored a hatrick.

Unfortunately for the Panthers, their winning ways could not hold out as they sank to the bottom of the standing at the end of the 1990's. Since that initial run, the Panthers have been rebuilding in a rebuilding mode. As recently as 2008-09 the Panthers have started to show signs of its early dominance, but the team was unable to keep that momentum rolling and once again missed the playoffs in the 2009-10 season.

Since their inception, they have won two World Series titles for this city and perennially have one of the youngest and best lineups in the NL East division. The Dolphins are the last of four major sports teams and are the NFL affiliate organization with this city. The Dolphins can be cited for fielding the only undefeated team in NFL history with Don Shula at the helm in 1972.
