Twins decline option on Burton
Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) – The Minnesota Twins announced Wednesday that the team will not pick up its contract option on reliever Jared Burton for the 2015 season.
Burton would have earned $3.6 million next season had the Twins exercised the option. Instead, he will receive a $200,000 buyout and become a free agent.
The 33-year-old right-hander has pitched in at least 64 games in each of the last three years for Minnesota, but had his ERA rise to 4.36 in 2014 after posting a 3.82 mark the previous season.
Burton, who has also pitched for Cincinnati over an eight-year major league career, received a two-year extension from the Twins that included the club option in December of 2012. He earned the deal after going 3-2 with a 2.18 ERA and five saves over 64 appearances during the 2012 campaign.
