Sandoval among 12 to reject offers
New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) – San Francisco Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval was one of 12 players who rejected a one-year qualifying offer from their team prior to Monday’s deadline.
As expected, every player tendered a one-year, $15.3 million offer rejected it, the Major League Baseball Players Association said.
Veteran outfielder Michael Cuddyer signed a two-year contract with the New York Mets on Monday after rejecting his offer from the Colorado Rockies.
Sandoval, 28, had an MLB-record 26 hits this postseason to help the Giants win their third World Series title in five years and is now free to sign with any team.
After submitting qualifying offers to their players, each of the former teams will receive a compensatory pick between the first and second rounds of next year’s draft if that player signs with another club.
The Mets gave up the 15th overall pick to ink Cuddyer.
AL MVP candidate Victor Martinez and 2013 Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer, who is candidate again this year, rejected offers from the Detroit Tigers.
Also rejecting offers were Melky Cabrera (Blue Jays), Nelson Cruz (Orioles), Francisco Liriano and Russell Martin (Pirates), Hanley Ramirez (Dodgers), David Robertson (Yankees), Ervin Santana (Braves) and James Shields (Royals).
