Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) – Evgeni Malkin scored in the third round of the shootout and the Pittsburgh Penguins continued their hot start with a 4-3 victory over the Vancouver Canucks. Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz each had a goal and two assists for the Penguins, who have won four in a row to improve to 7-1-0 on the young season. Olli Maatta also lit the lamp, recording his first NHL goal. Marc-Andre Fleury kept his perfect record intact by stopping 36-of-39 shots. Zack Kassian, Brad Richardson and Alexander Edler scored for the Canucks, who had a brief two-game winning streak snapped. Roberto Luongo turned aside 25-of-28 shots.

Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) – Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored a pair of goals to lead the Edmonton Oilers to a 3-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators in a Saturday matinee. Devan Dubnyk made 35 saves and Jordan Eberle also lit the lamp for the Oilers, who overcame the loss of forward Taylor Hall to a knee injury to halt a five-game losing skid (0-4-1). Chris Neil provided the sole offense and Robin Lehner came up with just 18 stops for the Senators, who had won their previous two games.

Buffalo, NY (SportsNetwork.com) – Coming off their first loss of the season, the Colorado Avalanche rebounded with a 4-2 victory over the lowly Buffalo Sabres at First Niagara Center. Ryan O’Reilly, Gabriel Landeskog, Matt Duchene and Paul Stastny each scored for Colorado, which had its season- opening win streak end at six games with a 4-2 home loss to Detroit on Thursday. The Avalanche finished just shy of matching the 1985-86 Quebec Nordiques’ 7-0 start for the best in franchise history. Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 28 saves, including 15 in the third period, when the Sabres came out with much more jump. They got a goal from Marcus Foligno 65 seconds into the third, but couldn’t overcome the hole their sluggish play dug in the first 40 minutes. Cody Hodgson also scored for the Sabres, who fell to 1-8-1 this year. Ryan Miller allowed all four goals on 26 shots.

Montreal, QC (SportsNetwork.com) – Seth Jones’ tally late in the third period lifted the Nashville Predators to a 2-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre. Jones’ second career NHL goal came after a nifty pass off the boards to David Legwand, who made a return pass to the crashing defenseman. Jones received the puck and patiently skated towards the goal before wristing a shot past Carey Price with 1:27 remaining. Shea Weber also netted his second goal of the season for Nashville, which won on the road for the first time this season. Legwand had a pair of assists. Pekka Rinne stopped 28 shots in the triumph. Brendan Gallagher scored the lone goal for Montreal, which saw its four-game winning streak come to an end. Price allowed both goals on 37 shots.

Tampa, FL (SportsNetwork.com) – Tuukka Rask stopped 23 shots and five different players tallied, as the Boston Bruins chased previously-undefeated goaltender Ben Bishop and claimed a 5-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday. David Krejci, Adam McQuaid, Patrice Bergeron, Chris Kelly and Shawn Thornton lit the lamp for the Bruins, who have won the first two of a three-game road trip which concludes in Buffalo on Wednesday. Rask came away with his first whitewash of the season and 17th career shutout to help Boston up its record to 5-2-0 and improve to 2-0 this year against the Lightning, who dropped a 3-1 opening-night decision to the defending Eastern Conference champions on Oct. 3. Bishop had won all five of his starts this season, allowing just eight goals in all, but was pulled late in the second after giving up four scores on 17 shots in defeat. Anders Lindback finished the contest with four saves.

Sunrise, FL (SportsNetwork.com) – Jonathan Huberdeau and Brad Boyes both scored in the shootout as the Florida Panthers downed the Minnesota Wild, 2-1, at BB&T Center. Aleksander Barkov tallied the lone goal in regulation for the Panthers, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Tim Thomas made 30 stops in the triumph. Jonas Brodin netted the only goal for Minnesota, which has lost three consecutive contests. Josh Harding registered 21 saves in defeat.

Newark, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) – The New Jersey Devils broke out of their early-season slump in a big way, getting goals from four different players en route to a 4-0 rout of the New York Rangers at the Prudential Center. Andrei Loktionov and Adam Henrique each scored in the first period, with Michael Ryder and Dainius Zubrus lighting the lamp in the second to help the Devils end their franchise-worst seven-game losing streak to begin the 2013-14 campaign. Cory Schneider, making his initial home start in a New Jersey sweater, needed to make just 22 saves to record his first shutout with his new team. Schneider outshined counterpart Henrik Lundqvist, who stopped only 15-of-19 shots as the Rangers fell to 2-5-0 on their season-opening nine- game road trip.

Uniondale, NY (SportsNetwork.com) – Jiri Tlusty scored a pair of goals, Eric Staal had two assists and the Carolina Hurricanes held on for a 4-3 win over the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum. Jordan Staal and Jeff Skinner also tallied for the Hurricanes, who have won two straight on the heels of a three-game skid. Cam Ward made 22 saves in the victory. Kyle Okposo, Matt Moulson and Frans Nielsen scored for the Islanders, losers in four of their last five. Evgeni Nabokov turned away 19 shots in the loss.

Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) – Braden Holtby posted 37 saves as the Washington Capitals took a 4-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday. Alex Ovechkin, Troy Brouwer, Brooks Laich and Joel Ward all scored for the Capitals, who have won two of their last three. Martin Erat had three assists. Artem Anisimov scored the only goal for the Blue Jackets, who have dropped four straight. Sergei Bobrovsky was tagged for all four goals on 39 shots in the loss.

Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) – Michael Kostka scored his first NHL goal against his former team and it was a game-winner. Kostka’s goal came during a flurry of scoring in the second period and helped lead the Chicago Blackhawks to a 3-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday. Bryan Bickell and Brandon Pirri also scored for the Blackhawks, who have won four of their last five, and Corey Crawford made 19 saves. Nazem Kadri tied the game briefly for the Maple Leafs, but they dropped their second in a row. Jonathan Bernier gave up three goals on 40 shots. Dave Bolland, who scored the Stanley Cup-clinching goal for the Blackhawks in June, returned to Chicago and had two shots in 16 minutes of ice time.

Glendale, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) – Martin Hanzal scored the winner in the third period as the Phoenix Coyotes rallied for a 5-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday. Mike Ribeiro scored twice and Antoine Vermette had the other goal for the Coyotes, who snapped a two-game losing streak. Mike Smith gave up two goals in the first period, but shut the door over the final two frames and finished the contest with 31 saves. More importantly, though, Smith also scored a goal with the Detroit net empty as he sent the puck the length of the ice and it just passed the goal line with 0.1 seconds showing on the clock. He became the 11th goaltender to be credited with a goal, and sixth to score one thanks to his own shot. Pavel Datsyuk and Todd Bertuzzi scored for the Red Wings, who had won four straight coming in. Jimmy Howard allowed four goals on 32 shots in the loss.

San Jose, CA (SportsNetwork.com) – Behind a four-point night from Joe Pavelski, the San Jose Sharks continued their recent dominance on home ice with a 6-3 victory over the Calgary Flames. Pavelski scored twice and assisted on two others to help lead San Jose to its 11th straight win at HP Pavilion dating back to last season’s playoffs. Patrick Marleau and Logan Couture each had a goal and an assist for the Sharks, who struck three times on the power play to bounce back from their only loss this season, a 4-3 shootout setback Thursday in Dallas. Brent Burns and Scott Hannan also tallied for San Jose to support a 16-save effort from Antti Niemi. Rookie Sean Monahan paced the Flames with a goal and an assist, with Karri Ramo stopping 30-of-35 shots in defeat.

Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) – Drew Doughty scored the winner early in the third period to lead the Los Angeles Kings in a 5-2 win over the Dallas Stars on Saturday. Justin Williams had two goals and an assist, Matt Greene had a goal and an assist, while Kyle Clifford also lit the lamp for the Kings, who have won two straight and five of six. Jonathan Quick stopped 27 shots in the win. Tyler Seguin and Rich Peverley scored for the Stars, who have dropped three of their last four.
