Norfolk, VA (SportsNetwork.com) – Solomon Mangham netted 14 points to lead eighth-seeded Howard to a 53-47 win over ninth-seeded North Carolina A&T in the first round of the MEAC Tournament on Tuesday.

Prince Okoroh added 13 points for the Bison (8-24), who will face top-seeded N.C. Central in the quarterfinals on Wednesday after scoring the last seven points in this one.

Lamont Middleton scored a game-high 19 points and added eight rebounds for the Aggies (9-23), who lost seven of their last eight.

Middleton completed a 3-point play with 2:33 left in the game to put the Aggies ahead 47-46 but Howard responded with a 3-pointer from James Daniel to take the lead back for good, sparking a 7-0 run over the last 2 1/2 minutes.

There were four ties and five lead changes and neither team led by more than four points throughout the first 20 minutes.

Final Score: Coppin State 75, Bethune-Cookman 68

Norfolk, VA (SportsNetwork.com) – Michael Murray netted 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the seventh-seeded Coppin State Eagles outlasted the 10th- seeded Bethune-Cookman Wildcats, 75-68, in the opening round of the Mid- Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament at Norfolk Scope Arena.

Arnold Fripp came off the bench to score 16 points and add 10 rebounds for the double-double, and Daquan Brickhouse chipped in 12 points, five assists and five boards for Coppin State (11-19), which advances to play second-seeded Hampton University in the quarterfinal round of the MEAC Tournament on Wednesday. Dallas Gary rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Eagles with 10 points and five rebounds in the win.

Clemmye Owens scored 22 points to pace Bethune-Cookman (7-25), while Maurice Taylor tallied a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Mikel Trapp contributed 14 points before fouling out in the loss.

Both teams came out hot to start the contest, with Coppin State netting 54.5 percent of its shot attempts from the floor, including 5-of-10 from 3-point range. The Eagles added 11-of-13 from the free-throw line in the period, and took a 40-37 lead at the intermission. B-CU shot 53.8 percent in the frame, hitting 5-of-14 from deep.

Coppin State connected on 44.4 percent of its shot attempts in the second half, and made 8-of-15 at the charity stripe. The Eagles were able to create some separation after the Wildcats shot a dismal 31.3 percent from the field in the period.

Coppin State outscored Bethune-Cookman from the free-throw line, 19-11, and outrebounded the Wildcats, 37-28. The Eagles had more free-throw makes (19) than the Wildcats had attempts (13).

Final Score: Florida A&M 65, Delaware State 61

Norfolk, VA (SportsNetwork.com) – Reggie Lewis scored 18 points and hit 4-of-9 from 3-point distance as the sixth-seeded Florida A&M Rattlers outlasted the 11th-seeded Delaware State Hornets, 65-61, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament opening round clash at the Norfolk Scope Arena.

Jamie Adams contributed 15 points for Florida A&M (14-17), and Jamari Bradshaw chipped in 12 points in the win. The Rattlers advance to the MEAC Tournament’s quarterfinal round, where they’ll battle with the third-seeded Morgan State Bears on Thursday.

Casey Walker led Delaware State (9-21) with 16 points, connecting on 4-of-6 from 3-point range. Kendall Gray netted 13 points with seven rebounds, and DeAndre Haywood tallied 10 with a team-high eight boards in the loss. The Hornets finish their season having dropped their last three games.

Delaware State took a 36-31 lead over Florida A&M at the intermission, but the Rattlers overcame the deficit in the second frame by outscoring the Hornets, 34-25. Florida A&M shot 42.3 percent from the floor in the contest, while Delaware State hit just 36.2 percent of its field goal tries.

The Rattlers outscored the Hornets from beyond the arc, 27-15, and forced 15 Delaware State turnovers. The Hornets had the edge in makes at the free-throw line, 22-12.
