Madonna Rumored to Play Super Bowl for First Time Ever
She’s just announced that she’s releasing her first album in three years in the Spring of 2012, with the first single being released sometime around February. So what better way for Madonna to throw herself back into the spotlight than playing the Super Bowl XLVI halftime show?
That’s the rumor going around, that Madonna will play the halftime show during the Super Bowl at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on February 5. But is it for real? The news was first announced by SBNation.com, but it’s still just rumor at the moment. Madge’s reps have said that “there’s nothing to confirm at the moment,” and NFL execs have kept mum about who will be appearing on one of the biggest stages of the year come this Super Bowl.
Confirmed or not, the rumor has got people talking. Would this be a sign that the NFL is starting to turn away from “safe” classic acts such as U2 and The Who, and are ready to head back into the world of contemporary musicians — wardrobe malfunctions aside. The shift was first apparent when The Black-Eyed Peas and Usher took the stage; could Madonna be the next, perhaps most controversial star to take the halftime stage?
All the buzz may be for nothing, and we may not want to get our hopes up yet. Even though it will be Madonna’s first time actually performing at the Super Bowl, it’s not the first time she’s been scheduled to. 1998 was the first year Madge was to perform during halftime, but those plans fell through and Gloria Estefan and Stevie Wonder took the stage instead. Three years later in 2001, she was once again scheduled to perform at Super Bowl XXXV, but she cancelled that performance, leaving a mishmash of big-name stars like Britney Spears, Aerosmith, NSYNC, and Mary J. Blige to take over.
So even if these rumors do get confirmed by either the NFL or the Material Girl herself, this may be a case of it not being over until the muscled lady sings.
