Garden-fired: Twins dismiss manager
Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) – The Minnesota Twins fired manager Ron Gardenhire on Monday after 13 seasons.
The Twins finished 70-92, the organization’s fourth straight losing season. Gardenhire had one year left on a two-year deal he signed prior to the start of this past season.
Twins general manager Terry Ryan met with Gardenhire Monday morning and said the decision to move on was mutual.
“The reason for this change is that in recent years we haven’t won enough games,” said Ryan. “It’s that simple.”
Gardenhire, who had managed the Twins since 2002 and was named AL manager of the year in 2010, was 1,068-1,039 as skipper of the team. He led the organization to the postseason six times, but hadn’t been there since losing in the divisional round in 2010.
“I’m out of here because we didn’t win,” said Gardenhire. “It’s all about wins and losses.
“I’ve been doing this for a long time,” he added. “Sometimes people just need to hear it from a different voice.”
Gardenhire said he’s not burned out and would welcome another managing opportunity.
The Twins have offered Gardenhire an undisclosed position within the organization, which Gardenhire has not accepted yet.
