Cano leaves ASG after taking pitch off knee
Flushing, NY (Sports Network) – The already short-handed New York Yankees saw their lone position All-Star, Robinson Cano, exit the Midsummer Classic after taking a Matt Harvey fastball off his right leg.
Cano, the only constant in New York’s injury-riddled lineup throughout the season, had a 96 m.p.h. fastball carom just above his right knee in the first inning of Tuesday’s All-Star Game. He stayed on his feet and eventually went to first after a brief discussion with a trainer.
However, after a Miguel Cabrera strikeout, Cano gingerly walked off the field under his own power, and Dustin Pedroia replaced him on the basepaths.
X-Rays taken of Cano’s knee came back negative, and he was diagnosed with a right quad contusion.
“I didn’t want to aggravate it,” Cano said. “You just want to be out of the game and put it on ice the next two days. … You don’t want to make that worse.”
Cano hit .302 with 21 home runs and 65 RBI while playing all 95 games for the fourth-place Yankees prior to the break.
