Indianapolis, IN (SportsNetwork.com) – Butler head men’s basketball coach Brandon Miller has taken a leave of absence, the school announced Thursday.

“Brandon Miller has requested a leave of absence for medical reasons, which the University has granted,” vice president and director of athletics Barry Collier said in a statement. “We are not in a position to further elaborate and we ask that everyone respect Brandon’s privacy.”

Assistant Chris Holtmann has been named interim head coach.

Miller was promoted to head coach last year when Brad Stevens left to coach the NBA’s Boston Celtics.

The Bulldogs finished ninth in their first season in the Big East and went 14-17 overall.

Holtmann joined Miller’s staff last year after serving three seasons as head coach at Gardner-Webb. He guided the program to a Division I school-record 21 wins and a berth in the CollegeInsider.com postseason tournament in his final year.
