Toronto, ON (Sports Network) – The Toronto Argonauts signed slotback/kick returner and reigning league most outstanding player Chad Owens to a two-year contract extension on Tuesday.

“Extending Chad Owens’ contract helps us to create continuity and ensures another key player remains in Double Blue for the foreseeable future,” stated Argonauts owner Jim Barker. “Over the past several months, we have been busy putting the pieces in place to build a team that our fans and all of Toronto will be proud of for the long term. Chad is a dynamic player whose work ethic resonates within our locker room, and we are very happy he has committed to being an Argonaut.”

Owens is coming off a mammoth 2012 campaign, which saw him lead the CFL in both receiving yardage (1,328) and kick return yards (2,418), in the process snapping Argos legend Mike “Pinball” Clemons’ 15-year-old record for combined yards from scrimmage in one season.

The native of Hawaii also set a single-game Toronto record with 11 receptions for 207 yards in an Eastern final victory against Montreal, then scored the game’s first touchdown in the Argos’ 35-22 Grey Cup triumph against Calgary.

“I am very excited for the opportunity to remain in Toronto and continue to build off of what we were able to accomplish in 2012,” said Owens. “I appreciate the confidence the organization is showing in me by giving me this extension and I love the city of Toronto. I am looking forward to sharing more successes with the city, my teammates, our coaches and with the fans as we strive toward our ultimate goal of winning another Grey Cup.”

Since arriving in Toronto for the 2010 season, Owens has compiled 2,636 yards receiving on 210 receptions and nine touchdowns, along with 5,464 kick-return yards and 2,652 punt-return yards.
