A New Home for the Nets
Do you remember the New Jersey Nets? It was just a couple of years ago that today’s Brooklyn Nets were just across the state lines and were a firm fixture in Jersey. In fact, they spent thirty-five of their seasons in New Jersey. However, they’ve always been something of a nomadic team going from New York to New Jersey several times.
The Nets have a long history. They were one of the original members of the ABA, the American Basketball Association. When they first started though, back in 1967, they had the name the New Jersey Americans. A year later, they moved to Long Island and took the name the New York Nets. At that time, Julius Erving, known to fans as Dr. J, led the team to two ABA championships. In 1976, the team became a part of the ABA-NBA mergers, and they moved back to New Jersey just a year later. They stuck with the name The Nets.
In the time since they were a part of the NBA, they’ve seen their fair share of highs and lows. They made it to the NBA finals twice during their time in Jersey. In 2012, when they moved to Brooklyn, they actually had a very strong second half to their season, which led them to a spot in the playoffs. They also had their first winning season on the road that year. In 2013, they hired former Nets player Jason Kidd as their head coach. Things are really starting to look up for the Brooklyn Nets.
What does the move mean for fans of the team from the old days? While there might be some hard feelings amongst some fans for the move, many from New Jersey still proclaim to be Nets fans. They still watch the team even though they are playing in the Barclays Center. New fans from New York are starting to flock to the exciting team as well. If you are a basketball fan and you live in the area, you surely want to get some tickets to enjoy games right down at the Barclays Center this season!
