When the Nets came into existence in 1967, they were originally part of the ABA basketball league which was set up to rival the NBA. Darryl Dawkins, Buck Williams, and Otis Birdsong helped carry this team into the playoffs from 1980 to 1985 but they could never manage to get very far because of their competition like the Celtics and the 76ers.

The next period of greatness for the Nets came in the mid 2000's as they made the NBA finals two straight years in 2002 and 2003. This team was led by players like Jason Kidd and Dikembe Mutombo. Ultimately, the team lost in both appearances. However, these back to back Eastern Conference championships are the high water mark for the Nets and their time in the NBA.
