Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) – Lehigh has been outstanding in late-game in recent years.
Fordham made sure Saturday’s matchup wasn’t close in the fourth quarter.
In the first meeting of ranked Patriot League teams since 2009, No. 12 Fordham turned back No. 13 Lehigh, 52-38, as junior quarterback Michael Nebrich passed for 384 yards and four touchdowns and scored once on the ground.
Fordham improved to 6-0, although the game didn’t count toward the Patriot League standings because the Rams are ineligibile for it. Lehigh fell to 4-1.
Nebrich completed 26-of-36 pass attempts, including three touchdowns to Sam Ajala, who had seven receptions for 166 yards. Nebrich also rushed for 56 yards.
Brian Wetzel caught 11 passes for 133 yards as Fordham piled up 630 yards of offense. The Rams scored touchdowns off a pair of Lehigh turnovers to turn a 31-28 lead late in the third quarter to 45-28.
Carlton Koonce rushed for 127 yards and one touchdown on 21 carries in the win.
Lehigh quarterback Brandon Bialkowski was 28-of-46 for 324 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. Lee Kurfis had nine receptions for 102 yards.
No. 3 Towson (6-0, 2-0 CAA) 44, No. 19 New Hampshire (1-3, 0-1) 28
Towson junior Terrance West rushed for more than 200 yards for the third straight year against New Hampshire, gaining 238 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries.
Tigers quarterback Peter Athens was 22-of-33 for 343 yards and one touchdown. Spencer Wilkins caught seven passes for 153 yards and one touchdown.
UNH’s Harold Spears had four receptions, including a touchdown, for 106 yards.
Samford (4-2, 2-0 SoCon) 44, No. 16 Georgia Southern (3-2, 1-2) 34
Andy Summerlin passed for 495 yards and three touchdowns, and Samford scored 34 second-half points while improving to 2-0 in the Southern Conference.
Fabian Truss rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns, Kelsey Pope totaled seven receptions for 201 yards and one touchdown.
Georgia Southern quarterback Jerrick McKinnon rushed for 181 yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries.
No. 17 Wofford (3-2) 55, Presbyterian (1-4) 14
Wofford had four players with at least 70 rushing yards, led by Donovan Johnson’s 98 yards and one touchdown, in a 411-yard ground assault.
Will Gay, Evan Jacks, Lorenzo Long, Jonny Martin and Caleb Lucas also scored rushing touhdowns in the win.
No. 20 Villanova (3-2, 2-0 CAA) 20, William & Mary (3-2, 1-1) 16
Quarterback John Robertson’s 1-yard touchdown with 28 seconds remaining to play was the difference as Villanova earned its third straight win.
John Carpenter’s 24-yard field goal – his third of the game – gave William & Mary a 16-13 lead with 6:17 left.
No. 21 Bethune-Cookman (4-1, 1-0 MEAC) 21, Delaware State (1-4, 1-1) 7
Bethune-Cookman quarterback Quentin Williams rushed for a 31-yard touchdown in the third quarter and threw a 15-yard scoring strike to Eddie Poole in the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats forced three Delaware State turnovers.
Charlotte (4-2) 53, No. 25 Gardner-Webb (4-2) 51
Leading 45-24 after three quarters, Gardner-Webb surrendered 29 unanswered points in the final quarter and fell to Charlotte’s first-year program. Matt Johnson threw three of his five touchdown passes in the last quarter to lift the 49ers.
Gardner-Webb’s Lucas Beatty was 35-of-52 for 389 yards and four touchdowns with one interception. The Runnin’ Bulldogs allowed 587 yards, more than double the 275 they averaged coming into the game.
