Brett Favre to Retire…Again?

Rumors abound that Minnesota Vikings‘ Brett Favre will announce his retirement today. Again. For the third time, to be precise. While these are just rumors at the moment, many speculate that the aging QB, coupled with a diminished receiving corps, has had it.

Across the league, and among the media and fans, many are wondering why it has taken this long. What is it he’s looking to do? Win another Super Bowl, or retire in Wrangler-land?

Not so many years ago, the former Green Bay Packers quarterback was a legend. A phenom. Undoubtedly one THE best quarterbacks to ever play the game. Then he retired, and went to the New York Jets for one season. Following that, Favre went to the Minnesota Vikings for a season, and retired again. Now, with a sub-par performance, it looks as though the aging and physically worn quarterback may call it quits. Finally, for the third time. Or is it?

Absolutely, fans of the game want to see a talented and successful player continue as long as possible. But there comes a time when that core player becomes a journeyman. Or someone unwilling to give up the life of a pro athlete. When one thinks of former Miami Dolphins QB Dan Marino, they often think of what an amazing talent the man was; not that he was unsuccessful at winning a Super Bowl. Of course that is a consideration, but he didn’t stay in the game to capture an illusive glory.

It is a sad reality that Brett Favre continues to hold on, but bail when things don’t go his way. Indeed he was coerced to come back to Minnesota for one more season – for the “sake of the locker room mojo” – or whatever they called it. But it becomes more painfully evident that it’s time for him to fly.

Seriously, you don’t want to knock the guy. But when you’re inundated with Wranglers and Sears commercials, you realize that he may better be suited – at this time – to shop for jeans and home appliances. Just sayin’… In other words, his current highlights include semi-cheap jeans, and a washer-dryer set. Football kind of falls by the wayside, and it’s looking more and more like a clip from the Showcase Showdown on The Price is Right.

Your thoughts – does Favre’s waffly attitude about playing/not playing/retiring/not retiring, impact the legend he could have been (and should have been) if he would have retired from the game as a Green Bay Packer?
