San Juan, PR (SportsNetwork.com) – D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera scored 26 points and led a second-half rally that staked Georgetown to an 84-80 victory over 10th- ranked VCU in the fifth-place game of the Puerto Rico Tip Off. The Hoyas trailed 53-50 with 10 minutes remaining before embarking on a 13-4 run, during which Smith-Rivera tallied six points, to forge ahead and ultimately hand the Rams their second loss of the tournament. Smith-Rivera knocked down 5-of-6 shots from 3-point range for the game, while Markel Starks went 10-for-10 from the foul line and finished with 23 points for Georgetown (3-2). The Hoyas ended 31-of-35 from the charity stripe, with Joshua Smith hitting 9- of-10 attempts as part of a 17-point effort. Briante Weber put up a career-high 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting for VCU (4-2), which earlier fell to Florida State in Thursday’s opening round. Treveon Graham compiled 17 points and nine rebounds in a losing cause, while Melvin Johnson netted 16 points off the bench for the Rams.

Michigan’s Spike Albrecht split a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left to make it 61-59 in favor of the 49ers, but Jordan Morgan hustled for the rebound and forced a jump ball on the missed second shot. Michigan (4-2) had the possession arrow and out of a timeout, Mitch McGary found himself all alone under the basket for the game-tying layup. Pierria Henry pushed the ball up the floor for Charlotte (5-1) and dumped off a pass for Williams, who missed a point-blank layup but had the presence of mind to tap in the rebound. Morgan’s Hail Mary pass with 0.4 seconds left was then tipped away as time expired. Charlotte previously took down Kansas State and Northeastern en route to its second early-season tournament championship in as many years. The 49ers won the Great Alaska Shootout last year. Denzel Ingram led a balanced Charlotte attack with 12 points off the bench, while Henry tallied 11 points, six rebounds and six assists. Willie Clayton added 10 points with 15 rebounds.

The Wildcats previously lost to Duke and Virginia earlier this month. De’Mon Brooks, the preseason Southern Conference player of the year, did not play for Davidson because of an unspecified injury. He leads the Wildcats in scoring, averaging 16.8 points.
