East Lansing, MI (SportsNetwork.com) – Keith Appling tied a career high with 25 points and Michigan State, the nation’s newly crowned No. 1 team, pulled away down the stretch to record an 82-67 win over Portland at the Breslin Center. Appling went a perfect 5-for-5 from 3-point range and added seven assists for Michigan State (4-0), which got all it could handle from the pesky Pilots before assuming control via a 14-4 run midway through the second half that snapped a 46-46 tie. Adreian Payne added 19 points and Gary Harris netted 15 just hours after the Spartans were elevated into the No. 1 spot in the polls following last week’s victory over then top- ranked Kentucky. Kevin Bailey paced Portland (1-2) with 12 points, while Ryan Nicholas and Bobby Sharp each had 11 in the loss.

Tucson, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) – Gabe York led a balanced attack with 20 points as No. 5 Arizona dominated Fairleigh Dickinson, 100-50, in the opening round of the NIT Season Tip-Off at the McKale Center. Nick Johnson had 16 points, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson gave 13 points and seven boards and Brandon Ashley added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Wildcats (4-0), who will play Rhode Island, which defeated Metropolitan State, on Tuesday. Aaron Gordon had 10 points and 10 rebounds and Kaleb Tarczewski scored 10 points with eight boards for Arizona, which shot 54.4 percent in the game. Arizona head coach Sean Miller won his 100th game with the team, the fifth Arizona coach to reach that mark. Sidney Sanders had 16 points for the Knights (1-3), who have lost three straight since opening the season with a win over Caldwell on Nov. 8.

Durham, NC (SportsNetwork.com) – Jabari Parker recorded his second straight double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds and No. 6 Duke beat UNC-Asheville 91-55 in the first round of the Preseason NIT on Monday night. Rodney Hood scored 18 points and Andre Dawkins added 13 for the Blue Devils (3-1), who have won two in a row since last Tuesday’s loss to Kansas. Duke fell two spots in the new Associated Press poll released earlier Monday but pushed its NCAA-best non-conference home winning streak to 104 games. The Blue Devils will host East Carolina in the Preseason NIT East final on Tuesday with the winner moving on to play the South champion next Wednesday in the semifinals at Madison Square Garden in New York City. East Carolina beat Norfolk in the nightcap Monday at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Sam Hughes had 16 points and David Robertson scored 12 for the Bulldogs (1-3), who were coming off their first win of the season Friday over the College of Charleston after opening with losses to then-No. 1 Kentucky and Western Carolina. Andrew Rowsey, UNC- Asheville’s leading scorer, was held to two points in 33 minutes. Rowsey, who came in averaging 19.7 points per game, was guarded by Quinn Cook most of the game. Rowsey finished 1-for-7 from the floor and missed all three of his 3-point tries. He had three assists, but just two turnovers.

Syracuse, NY (SportsNetwork.com) – Michael Gbinije’s layup off a Jerami Grant steal broke a tie with about a minute remaining and ninth-ranked Syracuse survived for a 56-50 win over upset-minded St. Francis (N.Y.). Gbinije’s bucket was part of the Orange’s game-ending 10-0 run. The Terriers, bidding for their first-ever win over a top-10 team, were shut out after a Wayne Martin free throw gave them a 50-46 lead with 4:10 left. DaJuan Coleman made all five of his field goals and matched his career high with 14 points to lead Syracuse (4-0), which shot just 35.3 percent, including 26.3 percent (5-of-19) over the final 20 minutes. Grant had 13 points and eight rebounds. This game was the Maui Invitational opener for the Orange, who will next play in Hawaii against Minnesota on Nov. 25. Jalen Cannon scored 16 points with eight boards and Martin added 13 points for the Terriers (2-2).

Gainesville, FL (SportsNetwork.com) – Patric Young scored 12 points with six rebounds and three blocks as No. 16 Florida beat Southern, 67-53, on Monday. Casey Prather and DeVon Walker both chipped in 10 points for the Gators (3-1), who led for all but the opening minute of the game. Southern (1-4) opened the scoring on Calvin Godfrey’s jumper, but the Gators went on a 12-2 run keyed by freshman Kasey Hill’s six straight points in just over a minute. Godfrey led all scorers with 18 points and Trelun Banks, son of Southern coach Roman Banks, added 12 points in the loss.

Final Score: (22) UCLA 86, Sacramento State 50

Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) – Jordan Adams scored 21 points and registered a career-high eight steals as the 22nd-ranked UCLA Bruins rolled to an 86-50 win over Sacramento State. Adams, who shot 4-of-5 from 3-point range and 8-of-12 overall, has led UCLA (3-0) in scoring in each of the its first three games. Norman Powell and Zach LaVine both scored 14 points for the Bruins, while David Wear contributed a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double. Dylan Garrity was the lone player to reach double figures for the Hornets (1-2), finishing with 18 points.
