Final Score: (7) Virginia 76, (21) Maryland 65

College Park, MD (SportsNetwork.com) – It’s nights like this that Maryland is probably glad it left the ACC. Malcolm Brogdon scored 18 points and seventh- ranked Virginia never trailed in handing the No. 21 Terrapins a 76-65 loss in Maryland’s first game of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge as a member of the opposite side. The Cavaliers completely dictated this meeting with their longtime ACC cohorts, which ended a 61-year association with the league to join the Big Ten at the conclusion of last season. Virginia shot 53.1 percent from the field, outrebounded the Terps by a 34-22 margin and led many as many as 18 points to deal newly ranked Maryland its first defeat of the season. Virginia (8-0) did lose leading scorer Justin Anderson to an apparent ankle injury with 9:24 left, the lone negative on an otherwise celebratory night for the Cavs. Anderson tallied 16 points and six rebounds before exiting, with Mike Tobey and Anthony Gill adding 14 and 11 points, respectively, to the victory. Maryland (7-1) struggled offensively all throughout, shooting just 40 percent and never sustaining any level of comfort against the Cavaliers’ tight defense. Star freshman Melo Trimble finished with 16 points, but most of that total came from the free throw line.

Final Score: (25) Utah 69, (8) Wichita State 68 (OT)

Delon Wright tallied 13 points and freshman Jakob Poeltl notched 12 points and 11 rebounds for Utah (6-1), which ran its own winning streak to five games and defeated a Top-10 team for the first time since a victory over No. 1 Alabama on Dec. 30, 2002. Gesell made a short jumper after being fouled on a drive through the lane, then sank the free throw to put Iowa up 58-55. Marcus Paige was called for a charge on the next North Carolina possession. However, the Tar Heels still trailed by three when Jarrod Uthoff missed a shot with 13 seconds left. Paige looked to force overtime, but his game-tying 3-point attempt did not fall. Gesell sealed the win with two free throws and finished with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting. There was miscommunication between Grant and Steve Vasturia at the other end and Grant’s pass intended for him in the left corner went out of bounds. Travis Trice missed a desperation leaning triple from the left wing with the shot clock running down on the Spartans’ next trip down the floor and Pat Connaughton sunk a pair of foul shots for Notre Dame. Trice nailed a jumper with seven seconds on the clock, pulling MSU within 78-75, but Demetrius Jackson split a pair of bonus shots to put the game away. Notre Dame posted just four turnovers in the victory.
