Santa Anita acquires Gold Cup
Arcadia, CA (SportsNetwork.com) – Santa Anita Park announced Friday its stakes schedule for the 40-day summer race meet beginning Friday, April 25.
The most significant item is the acquisition from Hollywood Park of its $500,000 Gold Cup. The 1 1/4-mile Gold Cup will be held on Saturday, June 28. The last two Gold Cups were won by Game On Dude.
“With the closing of Hollywood Park, we’re obviously entering into a new frontier here in Southern California,” said Tom Ludt, Senior Vice President, Racing & Gaming for the Stronach Group. “We have incorporated a good many of the longstanding, successful stakes that had been offered at Hollywood and added several of our own for what we think is a very comprehensive stakes schedule that will provide owners and horsemen many opportunities routing and sprinting, on both turf and dirt.
“Our Grade I stakes speak for themselves and we think it’s going to be a great way to end our meet with races like the Gold Cup and the San Juan Capistrano on June 28 and 29. With our expanded dates schedule and the Breeders’ Cup coming here for an unprecedented third consecutive year this fall, this is an exciting time in racing and Santa Anita Park is proud to be leading the way.”
The meet will conclude on Sunday June 29
