Rounding Third: Yanks, A-Rod deserve each other
Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) – Sometimes you are better off not saying anything.
Nobody needed another apology from Alex Rodriguez. Not Major League Baseball, not the New York Yankees, not fans of the Yankees, nobody.
Technically, I guess Rodriguez didn’t say anything on Tuesday. Whatever number apology from him it was, this one was extra special. It was truly heartfelt because, well, it was handwritten by the man himself.
Handwritten, people. In cursive, no less!
So, instead of just reading someone else’s prepared words, Rodriguez took time out of his day and re-wrote someone else’s words in cursive. You don’t think Alex Rodriguez actually did something that wasn’t carefully measured by a team of publicists and lawyers, do you?
The handwritten note may be the most A-Rod of A-Rod things he’s ever done.
At this point, though, there is nothing he can do to win anyone over. People gave up caring about him a long time ago. At this point, just go out and play. And try to do it without injecting yourself with anabolic steroids, human growth hormone, deer urine or whatever the latest thing out there is to give you that extra little oomph.
It is what it is. And sadly, this probably won’t be the last apology we hear from him.
But how about the hypocritical New York Yankees?
The Yankees are doing everything in their power to take Rodriguez’s home run bonus money away from him. Yet, just a day before A-Rod’s apology, they announce that they will be retiring Andy Pettitte’s No. 46 and rewarding the former steroid abuser with a plaque at Monument Park.
Pettitte, a guy who was so important to the Yankees that they decided to give his No. 46 to five different players – Aaron Guiel, Scott Erickson, Alan Embree, Darrell May, Donovan Osborne – in the three years he played for Houston.
So, A-Rod takes PEDs and is bad, but Pettitte taking them was OK, I guess.
Pettitte is a clown. He is a bigger phony than Rodriguez. For some reason, people seem to forget that Pettitte was one of the faces of the infamous Mitchell Report.
Pettitte apologized, says golly-gee a lot and is all about God, so everyone forgave him for some reason.
If you believe Pettitte’s claims that he wasn’t trying to gain an edge, he was just trying to help his team, well, I have a bridge to sell you.
Not only did Pettitte know exactly what he was doing, he was connected at the hip with one of THE faces of MLB PEDs, Roger Clemens.
And then he turned against his friend in court. So, Pettitte’s not only a cheat, but a rat, too. He says he only took them twice, but just happened to get caught. So, I guess he’s unlucky, too.
But let’s stay with the narrative that Rodriguez is the only bad person to ever wear pinstripes.
By the way, how many numbers are the Yankees going to retire? Bernie Williams, Jorge Posada and Pettitte are all on the docket this year. Plus a Willie Randolph Day mixed in, too.
Although, Randolph’s just getting a plaque in Monument Park.
You know what that tells me? The Yankees don’t think they’ll be that good this year. And like rats fleeing the Titanic, they know their fan base will jump ship quick. So, no better way to fill the stadium then to remind fans of those glory days that were probably fueled by PEDs.
And let’s get some money out of them, too.
It wasn’t a coincidence last year that Derek Jeter Day was the first NFL Sunday, a day they knew would be empty.
I’m holding out for Luis Sojo Night.
Until then, I’ll just wait for Rodriguez’s next apology.
