Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) – The Boston Red Sox hired Chili Davis to fill their vacant hitting coach position on Thursday.

Davis, 54, replaces Greg Colbrunn, who earlier this month elected not to return next season.

The three-time All-Star spent the last three seasons as hitting coach for the Oakland Athletics. During his tenure, the A’s led all major league teams in walks (1,709) while ranking fourth in home runs (527) and fifth in runs scored (2,209).

“Chili’s experience and success as both a player and a coach make him a valuable addition to our staff, and we are excited to have him working with our hitters,” said Red Sox manager John Farrell.

Davis was the hitting coach for the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox in 2011 before joining Oakland.

A switch-hitting outfielder and DH as a player, Davis batted .274 with 350 home runs and 1,372 RBI over his 19-year career with the San Francisco Giants, California Angels, Minnesota Twins, Kansas City Royals and New York Yankees.

The Red Sox also announced that Victor Rodriguez will return for his third season as the team’s assistant hitting coach.
