Plate runner-up Ami’s Holiday favored in Prince of Wales Stakes

Fort Erie, ON (SportsNetwork.com) – Queen’s Plate runner-up Ami’s Holiday is the 9-5 morning line favorite for Tuesday’s 79th edition of the $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie.

The 1 3/16-mile Prince of Wales is the second leg of Canada’s Triple Crown. There has not been a Triple Crown champ since Wando in 2003 and there won’t be again this year with Queen’s Plate winner Lexie Lou not running Tuesday. The Triple Crown also includes the Breeders’ Stakes at Woodbine.

Ami’s Holiday, trained by Josie Carroll, will start from post 2 in the 10- horse field of Canadian-bred 3-year-olds and have Luis Contreras again in the saddle.

“He always breaks sharp and settles into a good position early,” said Contreras. “We’ll try to find our spot and hope for a clean trip.

“He’s been doing everything right. His fitness is excellent, he’s confident and I’m looking forward to the race. We’ll see how he handles the dirt, but he has raced behind horses on the ‘Poly’, so I don’t think he will mind having a bit of dirt in his face.”

Owned by Ivan Dalos, Ami’s Holiday has two wins and two seconds in seven career starts for $423,460. The colt was fourth in this year’s Lexington Stakes at Keeneland. He finished third in Woodbine’s Marine Stakes on May 25, but was placed second after a disqualification.

The Prince of Wales will be televised on TSN with an approximate post time scheduled for 7:40 p.m. ET.
