PFL schedule opens with a doozy
Jacksonville, FL (SportsNetwork.com) – The Pioneer Football League really knows how to kick off its league schedule.
Saturday’s cross-country meeting between San Diego and Jacksonville at newly renovated D.B. Milne Field could be among the most important of the PFL’s 22nd season. The visiting Toreros were selected as the favorite in the league’s preseason coaches poll for a third straight season and Jacksonville was picked third.
Both teams feature potent offenses in what is expected to be an entertaining game.
New San Diego quarterback Keith Williams can hand the ball off to Cal transfer Jonah Hodges, who rushed for 120 yards in a season-opening win over Western New Mexico last weekend, or look for the dynamic senior tandem of Reggie Bell and Brandon White, who are both among the best wide receivers in school history.
Jacksonville is coming off a bye after opening the season with a 44-3 loss at No. 3 Southeastern Louisiana on Aug. 30. Coach Kerwin Bell’s squad, quarterbacked by his son Kade, finished third in the FCS in scoring offense last season (41.8 points per game). The Dolphins had three players named to the Preseason All-PFL team – wide receiver Andrew Robustelli, defensive lineman Maroa White and linebacker Mike Klein.
San Diego holds a 5-3 series lead and has won once in three trips to Jacksonville, taking a 24-7 decision in 2012 to snap the Dolphins’ 16-game home winning streak that was the longest in the FCS at the time. The two teams did not face each other last season.
