Newark, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) – Ryan Spooner’s first career goal came with 2:14 left in overtime to give the Boston Bruins a 3-2 win over the New Jersey Devils. Skating during a 4-on-2 rush, Torey Krug brought the puck in down the right wing and left a drop pass for David Pastrnak, who sent the puck over to the left wing where Spooner shot it home for the win. Pastrnak posted a goal and an assist while Daniel Paille also scored for the Bruins, who have won two of their last three since a six-game skid. Niklas Svedberg, getting the start as Tuukka Rask is battling an illness, made 29 stops in the win. Travis Zajac and Jordin Tootoo scored for the Devils, who have dropped their past two. Cory Schneider stopped 31 shots in the loss.
Final Score: NY Islanders 2, Calgary 1
Uniondale, NY (SportsNetwork.com) – Jaroslav Halak set an Islanders season record in style, turning aside 26-of-27 shots in New York’s 2-1 win over the Calgary Flames. Halak was denied a shutout when Josh Jooris scored with 20.9 seconds left to play, but still earned his 33rd victory of the campaign to set a new season-best for an Islanders goaltender. Jooris’ goal came just moments after New York’s Cal Clutterbuck put in an empty-net score that turned out to be the game-winner. Halak also stopped Michael Ferland on a penalty shot in the first period, while Ryan Strome delivered a power-play goal to help the Islanders regain sole possession of first place in the Metropolitan Division. Calgary, fighting for a playoff spot in the Western Conference and playing without captain Mark Giordano due to an upper-body injury, dropped its fourth game in its last five despite Karri Ramo stopping 37-of-38 chances in a strong effort between the pipes.
Final Score: Carolina 3, Washington 0
Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) – Anton Khudobin posted his first shutout of the season as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Washington Capitals 3-0 on Friday. Khudobin made 28 saves, while Brett Bellemore, Jeff Skinner and Nathan Gerbe all scored for the Hurricanes, who have won three of their last four games. Braden Holtby stopped 35 shots, but received no offensive support as the Capitals lost their third straight game on the heels of a four-game winning streak.
Final Score: Tampa Bay 4, Chicago 0
Tampa, FL (SportsNetwork.com) – The Tampa Bay Lightning received two goals from Steven Stamkos and 28 saves from Ben Bishop to rout the Chicago Blackhawks by a 4-0 count at Amalie Arena. Brian Boyle and Ryan Callahan also scored in support of Bishop’s second shutout of the season and 10th of his career, while the Blackhawks struggled to produce offensively in their second game since star forward Patrick Kane fractured his clavicle. Chicago was able to offset Kane’s absence with an outstanding performance from Corey Crawford in Thursday’s 3-0 triumph over Florida, but backup Scott Darling couldn’t match that effort in this one. He finished with 25 saves. The Blackhawks did make a big move during the game, however, acquiring veteran defenseman Kimmo Timonen from Philadelphia in exchange for a pair of draft choices that included a 2015 second-rounder. Timonen, who turns 40 on March 18, is close to returning from a blood-clot problem that has sidelined him the entire season.
Final Score: Colorado 5, Dallas 4 (SO)
Dallas, TX (SportsNetwork.com) – Ryan O’Reilly scored the lone goal of the shootout and Semyon Varlamov stopped all three shooters as the Colorado Avalanche rallied for a 5-4 win over the Dallas Stars on Friday. O’Reilly, Colorado’s first shooter, skated down the right side, cut toward the slot and lifted a backhander over Kari Lehtonen’s glove. Varlamov denied Jason Spezza, Jamie Benn and Vernon Fiddler to seal the win. Tyson Barrie and Nate Guenin each tallied a goal and two assists, Gabriel Landeskog supplied a goal and a helper and Jarome Iginla also lit the lamp for the Avalanche, who have won three of their last four games. Varlamov made 32 saves in his 17th straight start. Cody Eakin finished with two goals and an assist, Antoine Roussel and Spezza each scored and Lehtonen stopped 19 shots in the Stars’ fifth consecutive loss.
Final Score: Anaheim 4, Los Angeles 2
Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) – Corey Perry scored twice as the Anaheim Ducks rallied for a 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Friday. Ryan Kesler added a goal and an assist while Emerson Etem also lit the lamp for the Ducks, who have won four of their last five. John Gibson made 20 saves. Brayden McNabb and Trevor Lewis scored for the Kings, who have lost their past two after an eight-game winning streak. Martin Jones gave up three goals on 31 shots. Anaheim finally got on the board at 4:37 of the third when strong pressure behind the Los Angeles net resulted in the puck coming out front where Kesler snapped it in for his 16th of the season.
