After each team failed to convert in the first two rounds of the shootout, Staal raced up the slot and beat Tuukka Rask with wrister short side. Khudobin stayed with Patrice Bergeron and shut the door to seal the win. Patrick Dwyer scored in regulation and Khudobin stopped 19 shots for the Hurricanes, who have won two in a row on the heels of a three-game skid. Bergeron lit the lamp and Rask turned aside 35 shots for the Bruins, who lost their third straight game, all past regulation.

Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) – Alex Ovechkin tallied a goal and an assist as the Washington Capitals avenged their marathon shootout loss to the Florida Panthers last month with a 4-3 victory on Sunday. Brooks Laich, Karl Alzner and Andre Burakovsky also scored for the Capitals, who continued their hot play after a dramatic 3-2 win over Chicago in the Winter Classic on New Year’s Day. Braden Holtby stopped 29-of-32 shots in his 15th consecutive start. Nick Bjugstad, who provided the winner in the NHL-record shootout on Dec. 16, made it a one-goal game with 1:59 to play, but Florida was unable to tie it. Dylan Olsen and Vincent Trocheck also scored for the Panthers, who have dropped three of their last four games. Roberto Luongo gave up three goals on 21 shots over the first 40 minutes, but was replaced by Al Montoya, who turned aside 4-of-5 shots fired his way during the final stanza. Luongo took a hit from Ovechkin in the first period and gutted out the second before the injury caused him to exit the game for precautionary reasons.

Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) – Tyler Johnson notched a pair of goals, including an insurance marker in the third period, to lead Tampa Bay to a 4-2 decision over Ottawa on Sunday. Victor Hedman contributed a goal and assist with Steven Stamkos picking up the other score for the Lightning, who shook off a loss in Pittsburgh on Friday and won for the fifth time in their last six. Ben Bishop backed his offense with a 20-save effort. Kyle Turris and Mark Stone supplied the scores for the Senators, who have lost four of six with their modest two-game win streak ending. Robin Lehner stopped 26 pucks in defeat.

Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) – Patrick Sharp’s overtime goal gave the Chicago Blackhawks a 5-4 win over the Dallas Stars on Sunday. Corey Crawford made 30 saves for Chicago, which trailed by a goal on four separate occasions but answered each time. Brad Richards, who along with Sharp posted a goal and an assist, tied the game at 4-4 with his marker late in the third period, and Sharp won it 1:17 into the extra session. Brandon Saad, Patrick Kane and Bryan Bickell also scored for the Blackhawks, who have beaten Dallas in all three meetings this season. Erik Cole had two goals and an assist for Dallas, which saw its four-game win streak come to an end. Kari Lehtonen surrendered all five goals on 38 shots. The Stars had won their previous two games by a 13-1 total.

Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) – David Savard recorded the tie-breaking goal with 1:01 remaining to lift the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 4-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche at Pepsi Center. Brandon Dubinsky potted his first two goals of the season earlier to help the Blue Jackets bounce back from Saturday’s 6-3 loss at Arizona. Ryan Johansen scored as well in support of Curtis McElhinney’s 27-save effort. Colorado, which began its three-game homestand with a pair of victories, received goals from Jarome Iginla, Gabriel Landeskog and Cody McLeod. Semyon Varlamov finished with 23 saves in the setback.

Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) – Francois Beauchemin tied the game late in regulation and Ryan Kesler won it in the shootout, as Anaheim snuck past Nashville by a 4-3 count at Honda Center. Matt Beleskey and Corey Perry also scored for the Ducks, who improved to 2-1-0 on a four-game homestand which ends on Wednesday against the Rangers. Frederik Andersen came away with the victory after making 27 saves in the first 65 minutes and stopping two of three chances in the game’s final segment. Mattias Ekholm, Seth Jones and Craig Smith lit the lamp for the Predators, who were coming off that wild 7-6 overtime win in Los Angeles on Saturday. Carter Hutton made 30 saves, but surrendered two markers to the hosts in the shootout on three opportunities.

Edmonton, AB (SportsNetwork.com) – Matt Hendricks tallied twice and Jordan Eberle tied a franchise record with his lone marker as Edmonton shocked the New York Islanders by a 5-2 score at Rexall Place. Derek Roy and Matt Fraser also supplied offense for the Oilers, who picked up their first regulation home victory since Dec. 7 against San Jose. Ben Scrivens came through with a 31-save performance. Johnny Boychuk picked up a goal and assisted on the other for the Islanders, who could have vaulted over idle Pittsburgh back into sole possession of first place in the Metropolitan Division with a single point. Jaroslav Halak surrendered four goals on 22 shots.
