The Coyotes, in the midst of a five-game road trip after opening the year with a 4-1 home win over the Rangers, got a tremendous effort in net from Thomas Greiss, who stopped 36-of-37 shots in the win. Phoenix improved to 2-2-0 on the trip, which comes to an end Sunday at Carolina. Rob Klinkhammer was credited with the Coyotes’ first goal. Maxime Talbot netted the lone goal for the Flyers, who lost for the first time under interim coach Craig Berube. Philadelphia was coming off a 2-1 victory against the Panthers in Berube’s debut after taking over for the fired Peter Laviolette. Steve Mason made 29 saves in defeat.

Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) – Jeff Carter recorded the lone goal in the shootout as the Los Angeles Kings edged the Carolina Hurricanes, 2-1, at PNC Arena. Dwight King had a shorthanded tally for Los Angeles, while Jonathan Quick followed up a 27-save effort through regulation and overtime by stoning all three Carolina skaters in the deciding phase to help the Kings notch a second consecutive victory. Cam Ward matched Quick for the majority of night, turning aside 36-of-37 shots in a hard-luck loss. Jeff Skinner accounted for the Hurricanes’ only goal, a power-play marker with under six minutes remaining in the third period.

Sunrise, FL (SportsNetwork.com) – Jonathan Huberdeau and Aleksander Barkov each scored on a two-man advantage early in the second period, helping the Florida Panthers to a successful home opener while handing the Pittsburgh Penguins their first loss of the season with a 6-3 win Friday at BB&T Center. Brad Boyes scored twice, Tomas Fleischmann added a goal and three assists, and Barkov finished with a pair of helpers for the Panthers, who snapped a three- game losing streak. Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) – Duncan Keith notched a pair of assists and Nikolai Khabibulin made a triumphant return to Chicago in the Blackhawks’ 3-2 victory over the New York Islanders at the United Center. Michal Handzus netted the game-winning goal in the second period, while Khabibulin stopped all 12 shots he faced over the final two frames in his first start as a Blackhawk since the 2009 Western Conference finals. The veteran netminder, who previously spent four seasons with Chicago from 2005-09, re-signed with the team during the offseason. Khabibulin finished with 17 saves overall for the Blackhawks, who also received goals from Jonathan Toews and rookie Joakim Nordstrom. The Islanders failed to register a point for the first time in four outings this season after managing just a goal each from Josh Bailey and Kyle Okposo, which came within a 49-second span late in the opening period. Monahan, selected sixth overall by the Flames in June’s draft, has lit the lamp in four straight games while racking up six points over his first five NHL games. Mark Giordano and Dennis Wideman added a goal and an assist apiece for the Flames, who wrapped up a quick three-game homestand at 2-1. Joey MacDonald stopped 19-of-21 shots in the victory.
