Newark, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) – Logan Couture and Joe Pavelski each had a goal and two assists to help the San Jose Sharks spoil a very different home opener for the New Jersey Devils by posting a 4-2 victory. Patrick Marleau recorded a goal and an assist and Antii Niemi came up with 35 saves for the Sharks in the first home lid-lifter for the Devils not started by Martin Brodeur since 1993. Cory Schneider handled Brodeur’s usual duties between the pipes and finished with 29 saves on 32 shots. Joe Thornton added an empty-net score in the win, which improved San Jose to 4-0-1 on the young season. Mike Cammalleri and Adam Henrique had New Jersey’s goals in the loss, the Devils’ second straight following a 3-0-0 season start.

Buffalo, NY (SportsNetwork.com) – Niklas Svedberg stopped all 32 shots he faced and four different players lit the lamp as Boston claimed a 4-0 victory over Buffalo on Saturday night. Svedberg, who suffered a hard-luck defeat on Monday when a shot from Colorado’s Danny Briere eluded him in the final second of regulation in a 2-1 loss, avoided any drama with his first NHL clean sheet. Dougie Hamilton, Zdeno Chara, Torey Krug and Carl Soderberg provided offense for the Bruins, who had dropped a 6-4 decision in Montreal on Thursday. Jhonas Enroth made 32 saves in defeat for the Sabres, who fell to 1-5-0 on the season.

Montreal, QC (SportsNetwork.com) – P.K. Subban scored twice and Carey Price stood tall with 32 saves, as the Montreal Canadiens held off the Colorado Avalanche, 3-2, at Bell Centre. Alex Galchenyuk also scored for the Canadiens, who moved to 5-1-0 on the season. Alex Tanguay and Matt Duchene lit the lamp for Colorado, which dropped its third straight game. Calvin Pickard made 33 stops in defeat. For the second straight contest, Pickard was pushed into action due to a couple of injuries. The Avalanche placed starter Semyon Varlamov on injured reserve Thursday due to a groin problem and then saw backup Reto Berra leave just 2:46 into that night’s game against the Ottawa Senators. Pickard was recalled from Lake Erie of the American Hockey League, and made 23 saves on 27 shots faced in his NHL debut as Colorado lost 5-3.

Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) – Mike Hoffman’s goal midway through the third period helped the Ottawa Senators defeat the Columbus Blue Jackets, 3-2, on Saturday night. David Legwand and Erik Karlsson also scored for the Senators, who have won four straight. Robin Lehner stopped 38-of-40 shots in the win. Nick Foligno had a goal and an assist and David Savard scored for Columbus, which has dropped two of its last three. Curtis McElhinney turned aside 16-of-18 shots before leaving with an injury, and Sergei Bobrovsky served up the deciding tally, making 17 saves in defeat.

Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) – Henrik Zetterberg scored the game-winning goal with 10 seconds left in overtime to lift the Detroit Red Wings to a 1-0 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs in the back end of a home-and-home series on Saturday. Zetterberg, who had four assists against the Maple Leafs in Friday’s 4-1 triumph, took a crisp cross-ice pass from Niklas Kronwall in the slot and slapped a shot off the right post past Jonathan Bernier to give Detroit its second win in as many nights. Jonas Gustavsson posted a 30- save shutout in his first start of the season in place of starter Jimmy Howard, who was unavailable due to a sore groin. Bernier made 31 stops for the Maple Leafs, who lost their fourth straight game against the Red Wings.

Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) – Patric Hornqvist had a pair of goals as the Pittsburgh Penguins handed the New York Islanders their first loss of the season, 3-1, on Saturday night. Evgeni Malkin had the other goal for the Penguins, who were coming off their first loss of the season against Dallas on Thursday. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 34 shots in the win. Thomas Hickey scored the only goal of the game for the Islanders, who had won their first four games. Jaroslav Halak allowed two goals on 37 shots in defeat.

Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) – Alex Ovechkin went without a goal for the first time in four games, but scored in the shootout Saturday to help lead the Washington Capitals to a 2-1 win over the Florida Panthers. All three Capitals skaters beat Al Montoya in the shootout — Evgeny Kuznetsov and Nicklas Backstrom with snap shots to the stick side and Ovechkin with a nice shoulder fake that sent the Panthers goalie to the ice. Ovechkin had scored five goals in the last three games after being shut out by Montreal in the season opener on Oct. 9. He had a chance to end it in overtime but his slap shot from the left circle was stopped by Montoya. Justin Peters stopped Jussi Jokinen in the shootout and had 20 saves in regulation and overtime. Jason Chimera scored for the Capitals, who went 2-0-1 on a three- game homestand. Brad Boyes had a goal and Montoya made 27 saves in his first start for the Panthers, who fell to 1-2-2 after getting their first win on Friday against Buffalo.

Final Score: Philadelphia 6, Dallas 5 (OT)

Dallas, TX (SportsNetwork.com) – Claude Giroux’s power-play goal with 2:11 left in overtime gave the Philadelphia Flyers their first win of the season, a 6-5 decision over the Dallas Stars on Saturday. Jakub Voracek posted a goal and two assists while Andrew MacDonald and Giroux each posted a goal and an assist for the Flyers, who had started off the season 0-2-2. Michael Raffl netted the tying score with 3:53 left in regulation. Steve Mason started the game in net, but was pulled after giving up four goals on 18 shots in two periods. Ray Emery gave up a goal on five shots after that. Trevor Daley scored twice, Jason Spezza picked up a goal and three assists, while Tyler Seguin added four helpers for the Stars, who had won their previous two. The game appeared to be tipped in the visitors’ favor when Patrick Sharp was whistled for a tripping infraction 1:50 into the extra session. But the Chicago captain sent 21,640 paying customers into a frenzy by deflecting the puck away from a Nashville defenseman at the point, racing up the left wing and beating Carter Hutton with a low shot through the pads. Johnny Oduya provided an early score for the Blackhawks, who were coming off a 2-1 overtime loss to Calgary on Wednesday. Corey Crawford made 19 stops. Shea Weber provided the sole offense for the Predators, who hadn’t surrendered a goal while up a man in the previous 105 games. Hutton took the loss despite turning away 35 pucks.

Glendale, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) – Jaden Schwartz notched his first career hat trick, leading the St. Louis Blues to a 6-1 victory over the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday. Alexander Steen and David Backes each tallied a goal and an assist, Jori Lehtera scored his first career goal and added two helpers and Schwartz also added an assist for the Blues, who rebounded from Thursday’s 1-0 shootout loss in Los Angeles. Vladimir Tarasenko finished with three assists and Jake Allen made 24 saves in the win. Lauri Korpikoski scored Arizona’s lone goal and Mike Smith allowed all six goals on 36 shots.

Final Score: Tampa Bay 4, Vancouver 2

Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork.com) – Steven Stamkos finished with two goals and an assist and the Tampa Bay Lightning handed the Vancouver Canucks their first loss of the regular season by a 4-2 score on Saturday. Ryan Callahan scored the go-ahead goal in the second period, Alex Killorn also lit the lamp and Ondrej Palat added two helpers for Tampa Bay, which saw Ben Bishop make 30 saves. Chris Higgins and Alexander Edler both scored for the Canucks, who were coming off a 2-0 shutout of Edmonton on Friday. Eddie Lack started his first game of the season, but allowed all four goals on 24 shots.
