Buffalo, NY (SportsNetwork.com) – Erik Karlsson tallied the game-winning goal with 1:35 left to lift the Ottawa Senators to a 1-0 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Friday. Clarke MacArthur found Karlsson with an incredible cross-ice pass and Karlsson blasted a wrister pass Ryan Miller for the game-winner. Craig Anderson stopped all 35 shots he faced to earn the shutout. Miller made 45 saves in the setback, Buffalo’s second of the season.

Newark, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) – Matt Moulson’s goal in the sixth round of the shootout propelled the New York Islanders to a 4-3 season-opening win over the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center. Moulson’s tally, the only one between both sides during the shootout, halted a five-game losing streak in lid-lifters for the Islanders. Michael Grabner scored twice in regulation for New York before setting up Frans Nielsen’s marker early in the third period. Evgeni Nabokov turned in a strong effort between the pipes in the triumph, making 26 saves prior to the shootout and stoning all six New Jersey skaters in the final phase. Martin Brodeur, beginning his 20th season with the Devils, finished with 23 saves, while Damien Brunner netted his first two goals in a New Jersey uniform in the loss. Michael Ryder also scored for the Devils, who began their 2013-14 campaign with a 3-0 setback in Pittsburgh on Thursday.

Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) – Stephen Weiss scored his first goal as a member of the Red Wings late in overtime to lead Detroit to a 3-2 comeback victory over the Carolina Hurricanes. Weiss, who signed with Detroit this offseason after 10 years with the Florida Panthers, skated in uncontested and tapped a rebound past Cam Ward at the 3:13 mark of the extra session to lift the Wings to their second win in as many games to begin the season. Ward was terrific for most of the contest, keeping Detroit off the scoreboard through the first two periods. The net-minder turned away 35 of 38 shots, but Carolina surrendered a 2-1 lead in the final moments of the third period when Henrik Zetterberg beat Ward to knot the score and force overtime. Justin Abdelkader also scored for Detroit behind Jimmy Howard, who had 23 saves in the win. Radek Dvorak and Nathan Gerbe notched goals for the Hurricanes while Justin Faulk registered a pair of assists.

Columbus, OH (SportsNetwork.com) – Jiri Hudler and Curtis Glencross scored two third-period goals to help lead the Calgary Flames to a 4-3 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena. Two goals separated by 42 seconds propelled the Flames to their first win of the season. Hudler drilled a shot high over the glove of Bobrovsky from the left faceoff circle, while Glencross added a quick goal of his own on a pass from David Jones across the goal crease to give the Flames a 4-2 edge. Joey MacDonald stopped 29-of-32 shots in between the pipes, while T.J. Galiardi added a goal and assist in the triumph. Marion Gaborik and Jack Johnson both tallied a goal and an assist for the Blue Jackets, who lost their season opener. Reigning Vezina trophy winner Sergei Bobrovsky allowed four goals on 30 shots.

Winnipeg, MB (SportsNetwork.com) – Evander Kane notched a pair of goals and Devon Setoguchi scored the eventual game-winner as the Winnipeg Jets survived a late rally to clip the Los Angeles Kings, 5-3. Olli Jokinen also scored for Winnipeg while Bryan Little added an empty-netter to result in the final margin. The Jets have tallied five goals in each of their first two games this season, both wins. Andrej Pavelec stopped 33 of 36 shots he faced in the triumph. Jonathan Quick yielded four goals on 27 shots before Ben Scrivens took over between the pipes for LA. Scrivens, who spent the first two years of his career with Toronto, stopped all five shots he saw in his Kings’ debut. Matt Greene, Jeff Carter and Justin Williams scored for the Kings in defeat.

Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) – P.A. Parenteau scored a pair of goals as the Colorado Avalanche edged the Nashville Predators, 3-1, at Pepsi Center. Patrick Bordeleau added a goal and No. 1 overall pick Nate MacKinnon added an assist, his third of the season, for the Avalanche, who improved to 2-0 on the young season. Seymon Varlamov turned away 25 shots in the victory. Paul Gaustad had the lone tally for the Predators, who have dropped two straight to open the year.
