New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) – Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya captured the men’s title at the New York City Marathon on Sunday, while countrymate Priscah Jeptoo claimed the women’s crown.

Mutai also won the men’s title in 2011, making him the first man to win consecutive NYC Marathon crowns since John Kagwe of Kenya in 1997 and ’98.

Of course, last year’s marathon was canceled in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy and more than 45,000 runners took the course on Sunday.

Mutai finished in an unofficial time of 2 hours, 8 minutes and 24 seconds.

Jeptoo, who won the London Marathon in April, crossed the wire first for the women in 2:25:07.

It marks the third time Kenyans have swept the men’s and women’s titles in New York. In 2002, Rodgers Rop won the men’s crown and Joyce Chepchumba the women’s title. The following year it was Martin Lei for the men and Margaret Okayo for the women.
