Moonshine Mullin wins Alysheba Stakes

Louisville, KY (SportsNetwork.com) – Moonshine Mullin, ridden by Hall of Fame jockey Calvin Borel, retook the lead down the stretch to win Friday’s $300,000 Alysheba Stakes at Churchill Downs.

Champion colt Will Take Charge was sent off as the 3-5 favorite in the eight- horse field for the 1 1/16-mile stakes with Moonshine Mullin at 6-1.

Trained by Randy Morse for owner Randy Patterson, Moonshine Mullin broke sharply from the gate and took the lead heading into the first turn. Appealing Tale was racing second while Will Take Charge and Hall of Fame rider Gary Steven raced along the rail in sixth.

Moonshine Mullin continued on the lead around the final turn as Golden Ticket moved into second. Will Take Charge was taken off the rail but was unable to get into contention.

Golden Ticket, ridden by Joel Rosario, had the lead at the top of the stretch with Moonshine Mullin to his inside. With a furlong to go Moonshine Mullin drew even with Golden Ticket and was able to forge ahead down the stretch and post a half-length victory.

“I just sat as long as I could,” Borel said. “I looked over my shoulder and I didn’t see nothing else running.

“This is a nice horse. This horse is getting so good it’s unbelievable.”

Coin Broker finished third followed by Mylute, Bradester, Will Take Charge, Golden Soul and Appealing Tale. Normandy Invasion was an early scratch.

The time for the Alysheba on a fast track was 1:42.83.

Moonshine Mullin recorded his fourth straight win and picked up $180,000. Racing mostly in optional claiming races, the 6-year-old horse has won eight of 31 career starts for $659,834.

Moonshine Mullin paid $15.80, $7.40 and $5.40. Golden Ticket returned $5.80 and $4.80, Coin Broker paid $9.80 to show.
