Mine That Bird Stakes gets 10 to start
Sunland Park, NM (SportsNetwork.com) – Saturday’s $120,000 Mine That Bird Stakes has attracted a field of 10 3-year-olds, including one from the stable that campaigned the race’s namesake.
The 1 1/16-mile Mine That Bird is the local prep race for the $800,000 Sunland Derby at Sunland Park on March 23.
Double Eagle Ranch and trainer Chip Woolley, the connections that won the 2009 Kentucky Derby with Mine That Bird, will start Got Your Back. The gelding will break from post 8 with Dusty Shepherd riding.
Got Your Back, 10-1 in the morning-line, is a son of 2008 champion 3-year-old Big Brown. The gelding will be making his third career start, all at Sunland, and is coming off his maiden win on Feb. 7.
Breaking from the inside post will be 3-1 program favorite Rebranded. Owned by Tony Pennington and trained by Justin Evans, Rebranded will again be ridden by Ry Eikleberry.
The colt won the Riley Allison Futurity at Sunland in his last start on Dec. 22. Rebranded has earned $84,580 in five starts.
Pennington and Evans will also start Alsono, 5-1 in the morning-line. The chestnut colt will be ridden by Irwin Rosendo from post 5.
Alsono has won his last two starts, including the $50,000 KHEY Country Sprint Stakes at Sunland. He has four wins, two seconds and two thirds in nine career starts for $131,230
Undefeated Proceed is the 4-1 second pick and will start from post 3 with Alfredo Juarez Jr. in the saddle. The colt won his debut race at Zia Park last November and followed by claiming Sunland’s $85,000 Red Hedeman Mile on Dec. 28. Proceed has banked $68,040 from his two wins.
