Mickelson withdraws from BMW Championship; Tour season over
Cherry Hills Village, CO (SportsNetwork.com) – Phil Mickelson withdrew from the BMW Championship prior to the start of Saturday’s third round and his season on the PGA Tour has come to a close.
Mickelson, who entered the week 56th in the FedExCup points race, finished two rounds at Cherry Hills Country Club tied for 65th at 6-over 146. With only the top-30 players on the points list advancing to the Tour Championship, the final event in the FedExCup playoffs, Mickelson was projected to finish 64th at the conclusion of the BMW Championship.
“My primary goal is to rest and prepare for the Ryder Cup,” Mickelson said in a statement. “Without a chance to contend at the Tour Championship, the most important thing for me now is to prepare for the Ryder Cup.”
This is the first year since the playoffs started in 2007 that Mickelson will not advance to the Tour Championship. He was one of only three players, along with Hunter Mahan and Steve Stricker, to accomplish that feat.
The five-time major champion missed the secondary cut at The Barclays, the first event of the playoffs, before tying for 45th at the Deutsche Bank Championship last week.
Mickelson is now going to turn his attention to the Ryder Cup, which will be played at Gleneagles in Scotland later this month. He finished fifth on the Ryder Cup points list to automatically qualify for a spot on the United States team.
