Macon, GA (SportsNetwork.com) – As Mercer University’s reborn football program continues to grow on the FCS level, it will take another big jump in 2017.

Mercer announced Thursday it has reached an agreement to play two-time national champion Auburn at Jordan-Hare Stadium in 2017. The scheduled date has yet to be determined.

“We are excited about the challenge of facing one of the top teams in the Southeastern Conference in 2017,” Mercer coach Bobby Lamb. “This is a great opportunity to test ourselves against a FBS power in one of the best stadiums in the country.”

Mercer and Auburn met 11 times between 1896 and 1922. Mercer discontinued its program in 1941, but restored it with the 2013 season as a member of the FCS non-scholarship Pioneer Football League. This year, the Bears finished 6-6 in their first season as a scholarship program in the Southern Conference.

In the 2016 season, Mercer will travel to Atlanta to take on Atlantic Coast Conference member Georgia Tech.
