Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) – Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge captured the men’s title at the Chicago Marathon on Sunday, while countrymate Rita Jeptoo won the women’s crown for a second consecutive year.

Kipchoge finished in a time of 2 hours, 4 minutes and 11 seconds to edge Sammy Kitwara by 17 seconds. Dickson Chumba completed the 1-2-3 Kenyan finish by coming in third place, four seconds slower than Kitwara.

It was the first major marathon win for Kipchoge, who captured two Olympic medals in the 5,000 meters.

The top American on the men’s side was Bobby Curtis, who came in ninth place.

On the women’s side, Jeptoo has thrived since erasing the memory of a one- second loss to Ethiopia’s Atsede Baysa in 2012. Jeptoo, the winner of this year’s Boston Marathon, ended in a time of 2:24:35. That was over five minutes slower than last year’s pace.

Mare Dibaba of Ethiopa (2:25:37) was second and Kenya’s Florence Kiplagat (2:25:57) was third. American Amy Hastings came in fifth.
