Saratoga Springs, NY (SportsNetwork.com) – The Historic Review Committee of the National Museum of Racing has announced that a pair of 19th century luminaries have been elected to the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame. The committee selected jockey Lloyd Hughes and racehorse Clifford to be inducted.

These two join jockey Alex Solis, trainer Gary Jones and champion racehorses Ashado and Curlin in completing the 2014 Hall of Fame class. The induction ceremony is to be held on Friday, August 8 in Saratoga Springs.

Lloyd Hughes became the first jockey to win the Preakness Stakes three times. The native of Great Britain won the middle jewel of racing’s Triple Crown in 1875, 1879 and 1880. Hall of Fame jockeys Eddie Arcaro (six) and Pat Day (five) are the only riders to win more Preakness Stakes. Lloyd claimed two Belmont Stakes (1878 and 1880) and two Travers Stakes (1878 and 1880) as well.

Clifford competed from 1892 through 1897 and won 42 of 62 career starts with 10 seconds and eight thirds. The thoroughbred was owned by his namesake Clifford Porter and later Eugene Leigh and Robert L. Rose. He was trained by Charles H. Hughes, Leigh and Hall of Famer John W. Rogers.

The Historic Review Committee considers candidates whose careers were completed more than 25 years ago.
