Halfway Through The MLB Season, Who’s On Top?
We are halfway into the 2011 Major League Baseball season (MLB Tickets), which is set to end September 28, 2011. The World Series begins October 19 and ends October 28th (or earlier). Last year, the Boston Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees to win the World Series. Can we expect a rematch this year?
As it stands right now, the Philadelphia Phillies are leading the league, being ranked #1 in the NL East, and besting the NL Central (Milwaukee Brewers) and the NL West (San Francisco Giants). In fact, the Phillies are currently ranked #1 in the entire MLB sport, as the closest competitor, the New York Yankees, have only 50 wins compared to the Phillies’ 53. The Yankees are leading the AL East, and still maintaining higher wins than the AL Central and AL West.
Nevertheless, the New York Yankees are still playing fiendishly, winning 14 of 17 games even without injured power player Derek Jeter. However, Jeter is set to return, and this could give the Yankees a halfway point advantage over the Red Sox.
In the AL Central division, the Indians and the Tigers continue to battle it out, though the Chicago White Sox cannot be ruled out yet. The Yankees and Red Sox are dominating the AL East, while the AL West is being won by the Texas Rangers, with some stiff competition from the Los Angeles Angels.
The biggest story in MLB is that of the Philadelphia Phillies, who have the best record in any division. They are keeping Atlanta and New York Mets at bay, and building a considerable lead for the second half of 2011. So, what can we expect for the World Series? Oddly enough, many experts and fans are predicting the Yankees will make it to the very end, possibly to be challenged by the Red Sox or even the Indians.
Many seem to agree on the point that the Philadelphia Phillies’ offense is lacking; meanwhile, crucial injuries to star players (like Utley) could spell disaster. What do you think? Are the Yankees going to reclaim their honor for the millionth time or is there a surprise upset waiting to happen?
